Arizona Territory, 1878.
Caden Roark never expected to make it out of the canyon alive.
One moment, he was riding beneath the burning desert sun. The next, a rifle cracked from the ridge. His horse collapsed, sending Caden crashing into the dust.
More shots followed.
Wounded and bleeding, Caden crawled behind a rock as three armed riders appeared above him. They weren’t there for his horse. They were searching for something hidden inside his coatโa sealed envelope containing documents that could change the lives of dozens of struggling families.
Caden knew he couldn’t let them take it.
But he was injured, alone, and running out of strength.
Then another rider appeared.
An Apache woman emerged from the desert on a painted horse, watching the armed men from the ridge. She immediately understood what was happening.
One of the gunmen raised his rifle toward her.
Instead of riding away, she reached for her own weapon.
Caden stared at her in disbelief.
โDon’t,โ he whispered.
She ignored him.
She had made her choice.
She rode straight toward the wounded cowboy, knowing that helping him could make her the next target.
Within seconds, the canyon erupted with gunfire.
And Caden realized the woman wasn’t there by accident.
She knew exactly who was hunting himโand why.
