The hospital hallways were nearly empty late that night except for the sound of distant machines and quiet footsteps echoing through the building.
A young soldier named Marcus sat alone beside the elevator holding a small bouquet of flowers in his hands.
His military bag rested beside his chair as exhaustion covered his face.
Marcus hadn’t returned home in nearly five years.
After losing his best friend during combat overseas, he struggled to face the family he left behind.
For years, guilt followed him everywhere.
As the elevator doors quietly opened nearby, Marcus noticed a little girl standing alone in the hallway staring at him nervously.
She looked no older than eight.
At first, Marcus politely smiled and looked away.
But then the little girl softly whispered:
“My mommy still waits for you every night.”
Marcus instantly froze.
Slowly, he turned toward her in confusion.
The little girl walked closer and carefully pulled an old photograph from her backpack.
Marcus’s hands began shaking the moment he saw it.
The picture showed him standing beside his best friend Daniel during deployment years earlier.
Both smiling with their arms around each other.
Marcus could barely breathe.
“Where did you get this?” he whispered emotionally.
The little girl lowered her eyes sadly.
“My daddy carried it every day,” she said quietly.
Marcus felt tears instantly fill his eyes.
Years earlier, Daniel had sacrificed his own life during an explosion overseas to save Marcus and the rest of their unit.
After returning home, Marcus became overwhelmed with guilt and slowly disappeared from everyone who reminded him of Daniel.
Including Daniel’s wife.
And his daughter.
Now standing in the quiet hospital hallway, Marcus realized the little girl in front of him had spent years wondering why the man her father died saving never came back.
The elevator doors slowly opened again behind them.
But neither of them moved.
