Part 2

The moment Colonel Avery saluted me, everything changed.

For years, my family had believed I was simply a teacher who spent too much time away from home. They never knew I had served in the military for most of my adult life. They certainly never imagined I had retired as a Major General.

My father stared at me in disbelief.

“General?” he asked quietly.

“Retired,” I replied.

The room fell silent.

Melissa, my younger sister, looked completely stunned. She had just been promoted to Captain and suddenly realized the sister she had spent years competing with had reached a level she never imagined.

My mother struggled to find words.

“Why didn’t you tell us?” she asked.

I smiled sadly.

“I tried. Eventually, I stopped explaining.”

For the rest of the evening, old misunderstandings slowly surfaced. My parents admitted they had never truly understood the path I had chosen. Melissa confessed she had always felt overshadowed by my absence and believed I looked down on the family.

The truth was far simpler.

I had spent years waiting for them to ask.

When dinner finally ended, we stepped outside into the cool Virginia night. For the first time in years, it felt like we were beginning to understand one another.

Then my phone rang.

The call came from a military archive officer.

“General Carter, we’ve found a sealed file.”

I wasn’t concerned at first. There were many files connected to my career.

But then he continued.

“This one isn’t about you.”

I stopped walking.

“Then who is it about?”

There was a long pause.

“It’s labeled Melissa Anne Carter.”

I turned toward my sister.

She looked as confused as I felt.

The officer’s next words sent a chill through both of us.

“According to the records, the file was created years before Captain Carter ever joined the military.”

And suddenly, a completely new mystery had begun.
