Every Friday evening, the old veteran walked into the same diner and ordered two dinners.
One meal was for himself.
The other sat untouched in the chair across from him.
Week after week, the staff watched him do the same thing.
Nobody understood why.
Some customers whispered that he was lonely.
Others thought he was waiting for family.
One evening, a curious little girl finally walked over.
“Why do you always order two dinners?” she asked.
The veteran smiled sadly and looked at the empty chair.
“Because I made a promise.”
The little girl frowned.
“To who?”
The veteran pulled an old photograph from his wallet.
It showed two young soldiers standing side by side.
“My best friend,” he said softly.
The little girl looked around.
“Is he coming?”
The veteran’s eyes filled with tears.
“He was supposed to.”
The diner grew quiet.
Years earlier, the two soldiers had promised that no matter what happened, they would share dinner together every Friday when they returned home.
But only one of them made it back.
The veteran kept coming anyway.
Because some promises are too important to break.
And some friendships never truly end. ๐บ๐ธ ๐ ๐
