The military funeral was nearly over.
Family members stood quietly around the grave as soldiers saluted and folded the American flag.
Many people were crying.
Among them was a little girl named Emily, holding tightly onto her mother’s hand.
But while everyone watched the ceremony, Emily noticed something unusual.
An elderly man was sitting alone beneath a tree several yards away from the crowd.
Nobody spoke to him.
Nobody stood beside him.
Without saying a word, Emily let go of her mother’s hand and walked toward him.
Her mother noticed and quickly followed.
“Emily, come back,” she called nervously.
But Emily sat beside the old man anyway.
The elderly man looked surprised.
Then Emily softly asked:
“Why are you sitting all alone?”
Tears instantly filled the man’s eyes.
Before he could answer, Emily smiled and reached for his hand.
“My daddy always said heroes shouldn’t sit alone.”
The old man’s lips began trembling.
Emily’s mother finally reached them and froze when she recognized the stranger.
The elderly man had served beside her husband many years earlier.
After losing touch, he had no family left and came to pay his respects alone.
With tears running down his face, he whispered:
“Your father was the last true friend I ever had.”
The entire funeral fell silent as Emily hugged the old man, reminding everyone that even heroes need someone beside them. โค๏ธ
