For nearly a month, the little girl stood outside the bakery every morning.
She never came inside.
Never asked for food.
Never spoke to anyone.
She simply stared through the glass at the same birthday cake.
At first, the baker thought she was just curious.
But as the days passed, he began to notice something strange.
No matter the weather, she always returned.
Rain.
Wind.
Even cold mornings.
She stood in the same spot, looking at the same cake.
Finally, one morning, the baker decided to find out why.
He walked outside and gently approached her.
“Sweetheart, are you hungry?” he asked.
The girl shook her head.
“Then why do you keep looking at that cake?”
The little girl pointed toward the display window.
Tears immediately filled her eyes.
“Today’s my mommy’s birthday.”
The baker smiled warmly.
“Well, let’s get her a cake.”
But the little girl didn’t smile back.
Instead, she lowered her head.
“I can’t.”
The baker frowned.
“Why not?”
The little girl’s voice trembled.
“Because she died last year.”
The baker felt his heart sink.
For a moment, he didn’t know what to say.
The girl explained that her mother had always dreamed of having a beautiful birthday cake like the one in the window.
But they had never been able to afford one.
Now, every year on her mother’s birthday, she came to look at it and imagine how happy it would have made her.
That evening, after closing the bakery, the baker prepared the cake himself.
The next morning, he visited the small cemetery where the girl’s mother was buried.
There he found the little girl sitting quietly beside the grave.
Without saying a word, he placed the cake beside her.
The girl stared at it in disbelief.
Then tears rolled down her cheeks.
“It’s beautiful,” she whispered.
The baker smiled.
“I think your mom would have loved it.”
For the first time in weeks, the little girl smiled too.
And every year after that, on her mother’s birthday, a cake appeared at the graveโalways from the same baker, and always made with love. โค๏ธ๐๐๐
