Late one evening, a young soldier walked quietly into a small grocery store carrying nothing but a tiny birthday cake with a single candle.
Most customers barely noticed him at first.
But the cashier smiled sympathetically after realizing the soldier was completely alone.
โBig birthday celebration tonight?โ she asked kindly.
The soldier forced a small smile.
โItโs for my son,โ he replied softly.
The cashier glanced around the empty store entrance.
โOh,โ she said gently. โWhere is he?โ
For several seconds, the soldier didnโt answer.
Then slowly, he reached into his wallet and pulled out a folded photograph.
The cashierโs smile disappeared instantly.
The picture showed a little boy standing beside a military grave holding balloons in his hands.
โMy son visits his father every year on his birthday,โ the soldier whispered emotionally.
The cashier looked confused.
The young soldier lowered his eyes.
โMy brother died overseas two years ago,โ he explained quietly. โNow my nephew celebrates his dadโs birthday beside his grave every year.โ
The grocery store became completely silent.
Even nearby customers stopped listening to their phones and conversations.
The soldier carefully picked up the small birthday cake and smiled sadly at the photograph.
โHe promised his dad heโd never forget his birthday,โ he whispered.
And suddenly, there wasnโt a dry eye left near the checkout counter.
