After fourteen months at war, Michael finally got the call he had dreamed about.
He was going home.
On the way back, he stopped at a toy store and bought a teddy bear for his daughter.
He imagined her running into his arms.
He imagined his wife’s smile.
For the first time in months, he felt truly happy.
When he reached home, his heart raced as he rang the doorbell.
A few seconds later, the door opened.
A huge man stood there.
Michael froze.
The teddy bear slipped from his hand.
Before he could speak, the man turned back toward the house and casually called out:
“Baby, someone’s at the door.”
Michael felt his world collapse.
Then his wife appeared behind him.
The moment she saw Michael, all color disappeared from her face.
“Michael…” she whispered.
Tears filled her eyes.
“It’s not what it looks like.”
But Michael already understood.
Months earlier, after the military mistakenly reported him missing during a mission, everyone believed he was gone forever.
His wife spent months grieving.
Eventually, life moved on.
Now, the man she thought she had lost was standing at her front door.
The teddy bear remained on the porch as Michael turned away, realizing that surviving the war had been easier than coming home.
