The school cafeteria was louder than usual as students rushed through the lunch lines carrying trays and laughing with friends.

Bright decorations hung from the walls for the schoolโ€™s Veterans Day celebration.

Several military guests had been invited to speak with students about service and sacrifice.

Among them was a young soldier named Daniel.

Still wearing his uniform, Daniel smiled politely as teachers introduced him to students throughout the cafeteria.

Most children were excited to meet him.

But near the far corner of the room, one little boy sat completely silent holding an old faded photograph tightly against his chest.

Daniel noticed him almost immediately.

The boy kept staring at him nervously but never spoke.

As Daniel walked past the tables greeting students, the little boy suddenly stood up so quickly that his milk carton slipped from his tray and crashed onto the floor.

The cafeteria slowly grew quieter.

The boy walked toward Daniel with shaking hands and carefully held out the photograph.

Confused, Daniel looked down at the picture.

And instantly froze.

The old photograph showed two soldiers standing side by side overseas many years earlier.

One of them was Danielโ€™s late father.

The other was a much younger version of the little boyโ€™s father.

Danielโ€™s hands began shaking.

Before he could speak, the little boy quietly whispered:

โ€œMy dad said your father saved his life during the war.โ€

The entire cafeteria fell silent.

Daniel felt tears filling his eyes as memories of his father rushed through his mind.

For years, he had heard stories about the man his father carried to safety during an attack overseas.

And now, standing in front of him, was that soldierโ€™s son.

The little boy smiled nervously.

โ€œMy dad told me if I ever met you,โ€ he said softly, โ€œto thank your family for bringing him home.โ€
