As Judge Sterling opened the folder, the courtroom fell completely silent. Inside were my official military records, deployment orders, commendations, and medical reports documenting the injuries I suffered during combat. Every page carried government seals and signatures.
My mother’s attorney quickly flipped through the documents, his confidence disappearing with each page.
Then the judge reached the final section.
Attached were records showing that my brother, Derek, had forged several financial documents after our grandfather’s death in an attempt to gain control of the family farm. Investigators had already verified the evidence.
The color drained from Derek’s face.
My mother looked stunned.
“What is this?” she whispered.
Judge Sterling’s expression hardened.
“This court has been presented with clear evidence that Miss Vance served honorably in the United States Army and that false accusations were knowingly made against her.”
For the first time that day, nobody questioned my service.
Instead, everyone was staring at the people who had tried to destroy me.
